Alternative Energy Seminar

The May 18th Chapter Meeting will include an informative CEU credit presentation on the increasingly important issue of alternative energy sources with an emphasis on SOLAR POWER. Patrick Olsen of Halus Power and Leigh Seddon of Solar Works will discuss harnessing the sun’s energy.

Solar power has come a long way since 1954 when the first solar cell was created. Yet the basic principles of solar technology remain the same. Solar cells are made of thin layers of silicon. When sunlight strikes the cells, chemical reactions release electrons, generating electric current. Individual cells are grouped together to form solar modules which generate electricity when installed as a component of a complete solar system.

Questions that will be directed addressed include: Does solar power make sense in New York? What incentives are available to New York residents who install solar photovoltaic systems on the homes, offices, and community buildings? What are the newest photovoltaic technologies and what are their applications?
This presentation will be useful to both residential and commercial architectural and engineering practices. We look forward to a quality evening.
